Cookie policy

This page lists what waxjournal.com stores in your browser and why. Some of it is needed for the site to work. Two parts are yours to decide: Google Analytics, which only starts after you accept it, and our own view count, which you can switch off.

Needed for the site to work

These are set without asking, because the site does not work without them.

  • sb-…-auth-token (cookie, sometimes split into numbered parts). Keeps you signed in. Set when you log in, removed when you log out, and otherwise kept for up to 400 days.
  • sb-…-auth-token-code-verifier (cookie). Set for a moment while you sign in, to check that the sign-in that comes back is the one you started.
  • wj_cookie_consent (local storage). Remembers whether you accepted or declined analytics and our own view count, and when. We ask again after 12 months.
  • mapbox.eventData… (local storage). Set by Mapbox, which draws the maps, with a random id it uses to measure map loads.

If you sign in with Google, Google sets its own cookies on its own pages during the sign-in.

Our own view count, on unless you switch it off

A venue page shows how often it has been opened. To count that we use no cookies and nothing that identifies you, and the count stays with Wax Journal.

  • wj:view:… (local storage). A mark that this browser already counted for a venue page today, so you count once a day. It holds the venue and the date and nothing about you.

Switch it off in the cookie settings and your visits are no longer counted, and the marks are removed from your browser.

Google Analytics, only if you accept

We use Google Analytics to see how many people visit and which pages they read. Nothing is loaded from Google and no analytics cookie is set until you choose Accept in the cookie banner. If you decline, it stays that way. Google Analytics is run by Google Ireland Limited; the data is also processed by Google LLC in the United States, under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework. We have switched off every advertising use of it.

  • _ga (cookie, 2 years). Tells one visitor from another with a random number.
  • _ga_… (cookie, 2 years). Keeps track of your visit, so several pages in a row count as one session.

We do not use cookies for advertising.

Changing your choice

You can change your mind at any time: open , also at the bottom of every page, and set each part on or off. When you switch Google Analytics off, it stops and its two cookies are removed. You can also clear cookies and site data in your browser, which signs you out and brings the banner back.

Questions

The privacy policy explains what we do with personal data. Anything else can be sent to hi@waxjournal.com.

You decide what Wax Journal may store and count beyond what the site needs to work. The site works the same whatever you choose.

Needed for the site to work

Always on

Keeps you signed in and remembers the choice you make here. These cannot be switched off.

Google Analytics

Shows us how many people visit and which pages they read. It sets cookies and sends the pages you open to Google. Off unless you allow it.

Our own view count

Counts how often a venue page is opened, for the popularity number on that page. No cookies, nothing that identifies you, and nothing leaves Wax Journal. On by default; you can switch it off.
